MUNICIPAL CEMETERIES

Currently, there are six municipal cemeteries in Wrocław, which are supervised by the Management Board of Municipal Cemeteries in Wrocław. Their total area is approx. 140 ha. There are over 200,000 graves there, containing the remains of nearly 300,000 people (as of 2016). All of them are open, although not all of them provide for traditional earth burials. The cemeteries are open every day from 1 April to 11 November from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., and from 12 November to 31 March 31 from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.


OSOBOWICKI CEMETERY

The largest necropolis in Wrocław and one of the oldest in the city, founded in 1867 and expanded several times. From the beginning of its existence it has been a municipal cemetery, which is still in operation – both traditional earth and urn burials take place there. Its area exceeds 53 ha, the number of graves exceeds 120,000 and the number of buried dead exceeds 134,000 (as of 31.10.2016).

GRABISZYŃSKI CEMETERY

One of the largest and oldest necropolises still existing in Wrocław. The cemetery in its current boundaries is one of three parts which formed a larger cemetery complex in the first half of the 20th century (section II, established in 1881). Its area is 27 ha. Over 58,000 graves of 76,000 buried dead are there (as of 31 October 2016). It contains no new earthen burial fields, only a columbarium, and any other burials are only possible by adding the remains to the existing graves.

KIEŁCZOWSKI CEMETERY (PSIE POLE BRANCH)

The newest cemetery in Wrocław, the only municipal cemetery built from scratch after the war, was established in 1996 within the Psie Pole housing estate; it is often called the Kiełczowski Cemetery or the Cemetery by Kiełczowska Street Ultimately, its area will cover nearly 50 ha. By 2016 approximately 9 ha have already been developed (in front of the entrance to the chapel), and in 2016 another 11 ha were put into use (behind the chapel, where the Municipal Social Services Centre has its own field). Buried there are the remains of approx. 9,200 people (as of 31 October 2016). The cemetery is mainly intended to serve the north-eastern part of the city, but it also houses the only municipal crematorium in Wrocław.

LEŚNICKI CEMETARY

The smallest municipal cemetery located at Trzmielowicka Street in Leśnica. Its area is 1.2 ha. It was opened in 1883 as a Protestant cemetery and was extended twice, first in 1893 and then in 1905. After 1945 it became a municipal cemetery. Single tombstones and tombs made before 1945 have been preserved at the cemetery. Buried there are the remains of approx. 2,700 people. It contains no new earthen burial fields. Due to the groundwater level, only urns may be put in already existing graves. It is the only municipal cemetery where traditional burials no longer take place.

JERZMANOWSKI CEMETERY

A small cemetery, approx. 3.2 ha. It used to be a parish cemetery, but when it was filled, it came under the city administration and was extended. Buried here are the remains of approx. 3,600 people (as of 31 October 2016). By design, it is a park with a centrally located chapel. Urn fields are available.

PAWŁOWICKI CEMETERY

A small cemetery with an area of 2.2 ha located at Złocieniowa Street. It consists of three parts: the old part, where the cemetery chapel is located (eastern part), the currently operating part (central part), and the part covering the new areas (western part). Buried here are the remains of approx. 3,100 people (as of 31 October 2016).
